Project Title: Honeycomb

Target audience:

Organic/farmstand/small businesses.

Background:

Honeycomb is a geometric sans serif typeface evolved from the concept of glyphs formed from pieces of Crayola crayons.

Design problem:

Create a lowercase font inspired by a found object.

Design process:

I started the design process by creating the letters of ‘adhesion’ out of various found objects: sprinkles, kinetic sand, play-doh, broken crayons, and pieces of gum. After deliberation, I settled on the broken crayons and began forming letters with full crayons before deciding to see how it would look with smaller pieces. I liked the smaller pieces and actually started with the O glyph and built out similar letters from there.

Design solution:

When designing the final version of this typeface, I started with the O glyph as a hexagon and decided that would be the starting point of each of the glyphs. I liked the idea of contrasting the sharpness of the hexagonal points with softer, rounded strokes. Honeycomb combines geometric angles with simple shapes to create a legible yet complex typeface.
